What We Believe

It's a good question and one for which every church should have an answer. We are not here to perpetuate River of Life Baptist Church. This is a place that we, as followers of Christ, have chosen to gather together to worship God and to be equipped in life and in ministry. Our vision as a church is to kindle a passion, which becomes fervor to God, in the lives and individuals, families and our community. This passion is evident in our/their submission, with joy, to the Lordship of Christ and the Glory of God.

Our mission is, put simply, to gather and go. we gather to engage in worship that is God-centered, heartfelt and God focused. We gather to equip people to live a life of obedience to Christ in accordance with scripture. We gather together to be equipped to engage in the ministry to which God has called us. However, we believe that each member of the Body of Christ is called to go into the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we take the good news about Jesus into our community in our thoughts, our words and our actions. We are ambassadors for God and we are proclaiming his message, not ours.

We are broken and wounded people. We are imperfect and willing to acknowledge that we fall short of the standard that God has established. There are those who would see us as hypocrites, and we understand how that is an image so easily seen by many in our world today. However, we are people who know who we are and that we stand before God the Father, not in ourselves, but in Christ.

We are people in pursuit of being all that God wants us to be. We acknowledge that he has called us to be holy and that as we walk through this life, if we let Him, He will help us to be all that he wants us to be. We recognize that we are flesh and that we, or can be, given to temptation and sin. We do not acknowledge this as a reason to continue to sin, we admit that this should not be if we truly understand who Christ is and what he has done for us. Yet, we do concede that we do sin as a reminder of our need for forgiveness- forgiveness freely offered by Christ and freely received by us.

We are people who choose to see one another as Christ sees us. We understand that as part of the Body of Christ; race, politics, socio-economic,status, age or language should not be the things that divides us, but that we unite together with each other in spite of these differences. Yes, that can and does create problems and issues, but because we hold to each other first and foremost in Christ, we are committed to working through these issues.

We are people who are committed to the word of God. We seek to know it, not in part or fragments, but as a whole. We give ourselves to the study of it not just to know it, but also to understand it and apply it to our lives. We are not afraid of questions because we are committed to finding the answers in what God has revealed.

We believe that the Bible is God's message given to us to provide the standards for faith and conduct as individuals and as a local church. All 66 books were given without error, and the promises they contain will never fail.

We believe God directly created man, male and female, in the image of God and free from defect of any kind. We further believe that in the Garden of Eden man became a sinner by nature and choice and is therefore spiritually dead.

We believe that there is one God who exists by His own limitless power, who is the Creator of all that exists; who is above and beyond all creation; who is personally, lovingly concerned about each and every one of us; who is perfect in holiness and justice, who is unchanging, eternal, all wise, all seeing and all knowing. While we do not comprehend all aspects of the Trinity, we believe that God is existing eternally in three persons, the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit; that all these are equal in nature, essence, perfection, and attributes.

We believe that each local church is self-governing in function, and must be free from interference by any external religious or political authority. We, further believe that every human being is directly responsible and accountable to God in matters of faith and life, and that each should be free to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience apart from government decree.

We believe that the supreme task of every believer is to glorify God in his life; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be faithful in the use of God's possessions, which have been entrusted to him; and that he should seek to realize for himself full maturity in Christ.

We believe that God can rescue man from his hopeless condition by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe that this salvation was purchased by Christ on the cross, and is received by man through faith, apart from any human merit, works or ritual.

We believe that the church is the spiritual body of which Christ is the head. We believe that the true church is composed of all persons who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ for eternal life. We believe that this body expresses itself in local assemblies. We believe that the members of this local church are those who have been immersed upon a credible confession of faith and have associated themselves for worship, for instruction, for evangelism, and for service. We believe the ordinances of the local church are believer's baptism by immersion and the Lord's supper. We also believe that local churches of similar faith and practice should cooperate with and help one another. We also believe in the mutual submission of believers to each other in love.

We believe that Jesus Christ is God's eternal son. We believe that He took upon Himself the form of true man, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. We also believe in his sinless life as a Servant of others, His sacrifice on the cross for the purpose of paying the penalty of our failure to comply with God's standards, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His bodily return to heaven, His present ministry of speaking on behalf of His people at the right hand of the Father, and His personal, Visible, return from heaven to set up His kingdom on earth in all its fullness.

We believe in the bodily resurrection of all mankind to a conscious, unending existence. Those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ will appear before His judgement seat for the receiving or loss of rewards, position and status as they enter the kingdom. Those who have not personally chosen to accept the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ will appear before the final Great White Throne judgement. All who appear at this judgement will have a review of every deed and thought in life. The extent of divine judgement will be determined, but all who appear here will be consigned to hell forever.
